Signs your vinyl plank floor has a moisture problem
Moisture damage under a floating floor builds slowly. Most homeowners first notice it 2 to 4 years after the install, often in one room or along one wall before it spreads. Watch for these:
- Edges lifting. The ends or long sides of planks curl up slightly, often first near exterior walls or sliding doors.
- Joints opening. Gaps show up between planks that used to be tight, or the seams start to peak.
- Popping or clicking. You hear a snap or a click when you step on certain spots.
- Buckling. Part of the floor rises into a hump or ridge, sometimes enough to catch a toe.
- A musty smell or dark marks at the edges when a baseboard or transition comes off.
Why vinyl plank lifts and separates in Florida homes
Almost every house in Pasco County and north Hillsborough is built on a concrete slab poured right on the ground. Concrete looks solid, but it is porous. Moisture from the soil moves up through it constantly, and our wet ground and humid air keep that supply steady.
A floating vinyl floor sits on top of the slab like a lid. When it goes down without a proper vapor barrier, moisture gets trapped between the concrete and the planks. The planks and their locking joints are not made to sit on a damp surface for years. They shift, the joints strain, and eventually the edges lift and the seams let go.
Indoor humidity adds to it. A house closed up for the summer with the AC off, or a room where afternoon sun bakes the floor through glass doors, puts extra stress on a floor that is already fighting moisture from below.

Why the warranty often does not cover a lifting floor
This is the part that frustrates people most. The box said waterproof, the floor came with a long warranty, and now it is failing. So why will the manufacturer not replace it?
Flooring warranties come with conditions. Manufacturers generally require the slab to be checked for moisture, protected the way their instructions call for, and the floor installed according to their installation guide. When a floor fails from slab moisture and that protection was never put down, the claim is often denied as an installation or site problem rather than a product defect.
Waterproof describes the plank. It means water on top will not ruin it. It does not promise the floor will stay flat over a damp slab. If you plan to file a claim, gather your receipts and any install paperwork, and read the warranty's installation section before you call.
Can a lifting vinyl floor be fixed, or does it need replacing?
It depends on the cause and how far it has gone. Here is how it usually breaks down:
- A few planks in one spot after a known leak. Once the leak is fixed and the area dries out, those planks can sometimes be swapped with leftovers from the original job.
- Lifting only along the walls. Sometimes a floating floor was pinned with no room to move, under tight baseboards, cabinets or a heavy island. Freeing the edges can help if the planks are not already damaged.
- Lifting, gaps and popping across whole rooms. When moisture is coming up through the slab, patching rarely lasts, because the cause is still under the floor. A barrier cannot be slipped under a floor that is already down, so the floor has to come up.
How Red Eagle replaces a floor that failed from moisture
When a floor has to come up, the goal is simple: the next one should not do the same thing. This is our promise on every slab job in Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, New Tampa and the rest of our area:
- We take out the failed floor and haul the debris off.
- We test the slab for moisture after demo, once the concrete is open and can be checked properly.
- A vapor barrier is included under every floating floor we install on concrete. It is not an upsell.
- If the slab needs more than that, we show you the results and quote the fix in writing before any work.
- We install a floor suited to your slab and your rooms, whether that is vinyl plank, laminate, engineered hardwood or tile.
- You get the manufacturer's warranty on the product plus Red Eagle's own installation warranty.
Questions to ask any installer before a floor goes on your slab
Whoever you hire, ask these before you sign. A good installer will be glad you did.
- Will you test my slab for moisture, and when?
- Is a vapor barrier included under the floor, or is it extra?
- If the slab needs more than a barrier, how will you show me, and how is that priced?
- How will you check and correct the flatness of the slab?
- Does the floor I picked suit a concrete slab, and what does its warranty require?
- Who does the installation, and do you warranty the installation on top of the manufacturer's warranty?
- Will the old floor and debris be removed and hauled away?
Next step: have your lifting floor looked at
